Celotex Polar Bear

The Celotex sponsored polar bears

Polar bears are now classed as a ‘Threatened Species’ due to the Arctic sea ice forming less solidly and melting more quickly each year. Reports show the ice cap is reducing at a rate of 45,000km a year, which is having a devastating impact on Arctic wildlife.

Of all the Arctic animals, the polar bear is being most severely affected. In areas where long-term research has been possible, polar bear populations are showing signs of stress due to shrinking sea ice. This stress is manifested both in shrinking population sizes with declines in cub survival rates, as well as a reduction in adult bears’ weights and skull sizes.

With a naturally slow reproductive rate, the population was always fragile, but with the melting sea ice, polar bears are struggling more than ever. Polar bears use sea ice for hunting, mating and travelling. When the ice fragments and disperses, polar bears are either forced inland (away from their usual hunting habitat) or left to swim. Sometimes they are able to reach ice or land, although they may be too exhausted to hunt, but increasingly they drown before they reach land.

Effective thermal insulation such as Celotex, reduces the need for additional heating which in turn reduces the demand for fossil fuels and harmful emissions of greenhouse gases such as CO2. This in turn will help to slow the rate of climate change.

Operating within the construction sector and specialising in insulation products, we at Celotex are acutely aware of the energy efficiency and carbon emission impact of our industry and activity. While we continue to concentrate on our own activities and those of our trade partners, we have also sponsored a polar bear through the WWF.

Our sponsorship will help to protect the Arctic region’s rich biodiversity and maintain a healthy Arctic environment through (for example) supplying oil spill clean up kits to Arctic volunteers, as well as helping to raise awareness of the threats of climate change that we all face.

We cannot halt climate change on our own, but by supporting the WWF we are proving our commitment to environmentally aware and ethical behaviour.

Polar Bears, some facts and figures

  • The scientific name for the polar bear is Ursus Maritimus.
  • Biologists estimate that the polar bear population is between 20,000 and 25,000.
  • An adult male polar bear measures 8 to 10 feet tall and weigh between 550 to 1,700 pounds.
  • Female polar bears are smaller, with adults measuring 6 to 8 feet tall and weigh between 200 to 700 pounds.
  • The largest polar bear ever recorded, was a male weighing 2,209 pounds!
  • Polar bears have two layers of fur and a layer of blubber 11.5cm thick to keep them warm. Small ears and a short tail help to prevent further heat loss.
  • Polar bears predominantly eat seals, but they do also eat walrus, beluga whales, reindeer, birds, bird eggs and kelp.
  • Wild polar bears live for an average of 15 to 18 years. In captivity they generally live to their mid-30s, although one captive polar lived to be 41!
  • Polar bears have one of the slowest reproductive rates of any mammal, typically producing five litters (of two cubs) in their lifetime
  • Climate change is the biggest threat that polar bears face
