Lewandowski Willcox, Eton

To accommodate growth in their successful practice, Lewandowski Willcox Architects have converted and extended a Grade II listed property in Eton, where the business was founded some 20 years ago. In keeping with their company's environmentally conscious ethos, designers looked to a well known product with green credentials for insulation – Celotex' GA3000 boards.

The development of the building into a self-contained studio office was an opportunity for the architects to model their perfect building. Interweaving a modern extension to the traditional property, it is now a spacious and stylish home for the practice. Utilising the existing appearance of the property's two brick boundary walls to define the edge of the property and form the basis of the proposed structure, the office extension has been designed as a 'book end' effect with the end walls supporting a lightweight roof.

With a chance to cater to their own tastes, Lewandowski Willcox were free to choose styles and materials that they believe in, whilst keeping in with the character of the existing building and surrounding architecture. With its proven high performance properties, they specified Celotex GA3000 board for both wall and roof applications. Providing highly efficient insulation, Celotex is an established brand that proves consistently popular with the nation's top architects and designers – reinforced by Lewandowski Willcox's decision to use it on its own scheme.

The foil faced polyisocyanurate (PIR) boards provide more insulation per mm than many other materials, including mineral wools. This makes them perfect for space saving applications ensuring that structures have effective thermal envelopes.

Lewandowski Willcox were especially drawn to this feature of Celotex. The first PIR boards to be awarded an A+ rating when compared to the BRE Green Guide 2008, the boards are a proven means of reducing heat needs - thereby minimising carbon emissions and protecting the environment. The boards also have low Global Warming Potential and zero Ozone Depletion Potential, further demonstrating their environmental credentials.

In all, 1,000m² of Celotex GA3000 were used to insulate the building’s new steel framed structure. Applied to both walls and roofing, it was easily installed by specialist contractors Woods Commercial, thanks to its superb workability. Though exceptionally durable, it is very lightweight and easily cut on site. Easily fitted in place owing to their rigidity, Celotex boards are a far more convenient material than mineral wools or pumped-in insulation materials.

Now complete, the stylish offices impress clients and provide a showcase for the company's talent. From its eye catching mezzanine to its aesthetically pleasing exterior, it is an example of the company's ethos – and a demonstration of the quality of Celotex insulation.
