Black Country Museum

Situated in Dudley in the West Midlands, the Black Country Living Museum has recently undergone a reconstruction of original buildings in order to ensure that the popular attraction can meet the demands of its growing visitor numbers whilst reducing its carbon footprint. Working against the clock to ensure that the project would cause minimal disruption to visitors, specifiers opted for high thermal performance and easily installed Celotex PL3000 thermal laminate PIR insulation boards.

Tracing the history of the Black Country, the museum features twenty hectares and forty buildings dedicated to the industrial and rural heritage of the region. The reconstruction of the new 1930 High Street, overseen by Capital Design Partnership, has added a new dimension to the Museum and enhanced the visitor experience.

Owing to the time constraints of the project and with thermal performance a priority, specifiers chose Celotex’s innovative PL3000 insulation. What makes these boards so special, alongside their excellent thermal performance, is their ease of installation. A combination of insulation and tapered edge plasterboard integrated into one product, it made for a rapid renovation of the ‘Fish and Chip’ shop kitchen area and the first floor rooms over all of the shops.

With great thermal efficiency, the polyisocyanurate (PIR) 40mm boards (plus their 12.5mm plasterboard layer) provide an effective and easily installed thermal shell for the renovated areas. Able to provide a more thermally efficient building envelope, thus reducing heating costs and minimising the museum’s carbon footprint, the product represented a superb means of bringing the traditional brickwork structure to the standards expected of modern buildings.

The insulation component of Celotex PL3000 boards achieves an A rating when compared to the BRE Green Guide 2008 and has a low Global Warming Potential and zero Ozone Depletion Potential.

Exceptionally versatile, Celotex PL3000 is suitable for mechanical fixing or direct bonding and is perfect for either new build or renovation projects. At the Black Country Living Museum, it was fixed to the reconstructed external brick walls. The 1200mm x 2400mm boards were then cut to fit the ceiling height of the room. A continuous band of gypsum adhesive was applied to all skirtings, ceiling levels and openings and dabs were applied to the brick wall. The boards were then fixed and tightly butted before being taped to create a vapour control layer.
